Number your pages in the corner or center you choose.

Add page numbers to a PDF in seconds, without Acrobat. Choose where the numbers go, how they look and which number to start from. It’s ideal for theses, legal bundles, manuals and reports that have been merged from several files and lost their numbering.

Formats range from a plain 1 to Page 1 of 10, in any corner or centered at the top or bottom. You can skip a cover page too. The PDF is numbered inside your browser and never uploaded.

It’s free, with no account and no watermark, and you can number several PDFs in one batch. Numbers can be sized from 6 to 36 to match your text, and the rest of each page is left exactly as it was.

How to use Add page numbers

  1. Add your PDFs

Drop the PDFs you want to number onto the page, or pick them from your device.

  2. Pick position and format

Choose a Position, such as Bottom center or Top right, and a Format: 1, Page 1, 1 of 10 or Page 1 of 10.

  3. Set the details

Enter the First number, tick Skip the first page (cover) if needed, and adjust Size.

  4. Click Add page numbers

Press Add page numbers and download the numbered PDF.

How to number pages starting from a specific page

With Skip the first page (cover) ticked, the cover is left blank and numbering begins on the second page. Combine that with First number to control what appears there: set it to 1 if the page after the cover should read 1, or 2 if the cover counts as page one.

First number is also useful when a document continues another. If part two of a report starts on page 48, set First number to 48 and the numbering runs on from there.

Choosing a format and position

Bottom center with a plain number is the most common choice for essays and reports. Legal and academic documents often use Page 1 of 10, which shows readers at once whether any pages are missing. Bottom right or top right suits printed documents that are flipped through like a book.

Size 10 to 12 matches typical body text. Go smaller if the numbers clash with footers already on the page.

Numbering a PDF built from several files

Combine the files first with Merge PDF, check the order in Organize PDF, then add page numbers to the finished document so the count runs continuously from start to end. Adding numbers before merging would restart them at each file.

Sometimes a restart is exactly what you want, such as an appendix that begins again at 1. In that case, number the appendix as its own file, number the main part separately, and merge the two afterward.
